Dad's Famous Grilled Cheese Sandwhiches

I talk so much about my mom, cause after all this is Karene's Kitchen, but my dad does lots of stuff in Karene's Kitchen too - like washing the floor! Ha! He's so sweet.

Anyway, on Saturdays we always got a special treat. Dad made lunch for us. If dad was making lunch you knew you were getting grilled cheese. It's the only thing he knows how to cook, but he cooks them well.

Dad does a couple little things to make his grilled cheeses special:

Of course you have to butter the outside portions of the bread.

Make sure your griddle is nice and hot before you put the buttered portion down.

Put both pieces of bread down.

Put one and a half slices of cheese on one piece of the bread.

Then put a little bit of ketchup in the middle, and spread it around a bit.

Once the cheese starts to melt, put the other side on top.

Flip and make sure both sides are golden brown before serving.

The ketchup may sound strange to some of you, but it actually adds a neat flavor to the grilled cheese. Of course, Karene thinks putting ketchup on a grilled cheese is horrible! Which way do you like it better? With or without ketchup? I'm voting for WITH ketchup.

Grilled cheese is a big hit here in my house (though "I" can't eat 'em as I'm allergic to milk!) & it's good, filling, & goes well with LOTS of soups, so I think your dad has something there!
Love your site, btw! Can't beat food & new recipes...especially the ones passed down thru the generations! Continued success! God bless!

I have never tried it with ketchup. I like to make a hole in the bread so some of the runny cheese comes out and caramelises in the pan mmmm!

ooo- that runny cheese that caramelizes in the pan is so good. Especially the cheese from when your making cheeseburgers. Probably cause it gets to cook in some of that grease. Yum Yum
I never said this was a healthy eating site!
